X-Guard / Single-Leg X

Gets under the hips, isolates a leg, and topples the strongest passer.

X-guard and single-leg X are about getting completely under the opponent's hips and taking one leg hostage. Once you're beneath their base with a leg isolated, their weight has nowhere to go; you extend, sweep, and the biggest, strongest passer topples because you've removed the leg they'd use to counter. Leandro Lo and Marcelo Garcia are known for sweeping and taking down much larger opponents from here. Being on the wrong end feels like standing on one leg on ice: you're upright, you think you're safe, and then the leg you're standing on gets stretched away and you're falling with no base to catch yourself. It works in gi and no-gi and suits players who are comfortable underneath and like to work off their back to come up, whether through sweeps or a technical stand-up into a takedown. You don't need to be big, since the whole point is beating size, but you need good hip mobility and the patience to secure the entry before you attack. The main weakness is that entering under the hips exposes your own bottom leg, so a leg-lock-aware passer can counter your ashi-garami with an attack of their own. Start with the technical stand-up and a basic SLX sweep. The stand-up teaches you to come up on the isolated leg and convert to a takedown, which keeps you safe when the sweep isn't there; the SLX sweep teaches you to off-balance and topple from underneath. Learn the ashi-garami entries carefully alongside them so you're always threatening, never exposed.

Key weapons

Where it breaks

X-guard and single-leg-X wrap one of his legs, but they leave your own bottom leg extended and available. A savvy opponent counters by attacking that exposed leg with his own ashi-garami or a straight-ankle before you finish the sweep. It becomes a leg-lock race, and if your entry is loose he catches your foot before you off-balance him.
