De La Riva / Berimbolo

De La Riva into the berimbolo is the modern gi back-take game. You wrap a De La Riva hook around the outside of the lead leg, grab the far sleeve or the ankle, and use that connection to invert underneath, spin through, and come up on the back before your opponent understands they've lost their base. The Mendes brothers and the Miyao brothers are known for building the template. Facing it is disorienting: you feel a light hook you're tempted to ignore, you step in to pass, and suddenly they're upside down between your legs and you're spinning to keep from giving up your back, usually a beat too late. It suits flexible, coordinated, athletic players who are comfortable inverting and living in scrambles; it's timing-heavy and movement-heavy, so it rewards mat time and a willingness to be upside down more than it rewards size or strength. The weaknesses come with the acrobatics: inverting exposes your legs, so a savvy opponent can meet the berimbolo with a leg-lock counter, and if your timing is off a strong leg-drag cuts the whole rotation short. Start with the De La Riva hook itself and one berimbolo entry. Get comfortable establishing and keeping the DLR hook with the matching sleeve or ankle grip; that connection is what makes everything else possible. Then drill the invert-and-spin to the back off a standard opening. Add the leg-drag counters so you have an answer when they beat your timing, and the position becomes a two-way threat rather than an all-or-nothing gamble.
