Wrestler / Wrestle-Up
Wrestling for BJJ
Dictates position with takedowns on top and elevator wrestle-ups from the bottom.
The wrestler decides where the match happens. On top you shoot doubles and singles, snap heads down, and ride with relentless top pressure; on the bottom you refuse to play flat, elevating into wrestle-up sweeps to get back on top the instant you are taken down. Position is the whole point. You dominate the phase before submissions even enter the picture, then finish once you have established control. Facing this player is exhausting. You get moved, snapped, and re-shot on before you can settle. When you sweep them, they wrestle up and you are defending again; when you pull guard, they pass with weight and pace. Every exchange demands you match a pressure and a motor most guard players never build. It suits strong, explosive, high-motor athletes who like to impose rather than react, and who accept the conditioning cost of chaining attempts. Thick, powerful builds thrive, but leverage and timing matter more than size, and you need to enjoy the grind and the scramble. Start with the two entries that carry everything: a clean double-leg and a snap-down to front headlock, drilling the level change and penetration step until they are reflexive. Add the wrestle-up from bottom, posting on a hand, elevating into the legs, and standing into a body-lock, so being on the bottom is just another route to top. In no-gi this game has one real tax: exposed shots invite guillotines and leg-lock counters. Drill a chin-tuck and hand-fight on entries and stay aware of your feet, so your offense does not hand the finish away.
Key weapons
- DoublesThe double leg drives through both legs to put the opponent flat, the highest-percentage takedown for reaching top control.
- SinglesThe single leg isolates one leg and offers many finishes, staying reliable even when the opponent defends heavily.
- Snap-downsSnapping the head down breaks posture and opens the front headlock, the back, or a quick re-shot.
- Wrestle-up sweepsFrom bottom you wrestle back to your feet, using underhooks and level changes to reverse position instead of playing guard.
- Top ridesHeavy top riding keeps the opponent grounded and drains their energy while you hunt the back or a pass.
Where it breaks
Every shot lowers your head and extends your neck, and in jiu-jitsu that is exactly what guillotines and front headlocks feed on. A guard player who welcomes the takedown can also meet your legs with a leg-lock entry, catching the heel or knee as you drive through. The fix is level-changing on clean setups, keeping your head up and to the inside, and respecting that the mat rewards submissions the wrestling room never taught you to fear.
